Thanks for the comments, both of you. Genevieve, I'm so very sorry your mom had to deal with that. It just sucks and there's no way around it. Your comment really highlights how just recognizing the truth and never failing to recognize it can be a powerful motivator itself.

Roslin - that article blew me away, and I have to say I'm not surprised about the link between smoking and anti-depressant effects. Thanks for linking it here.

Great tips! Since you mentioned depression, I'd like to share this article which http://pn.psychiatryonline.org/cgi/content/full/36/23/20 discusses the link between depression and smokers.

My lightbulb moment when it came to quitting was when my mother was diagnosed with lung cancer. I had been ratcheting up the hatred of cigarettes for sometime, in preparation for quitting, but the effect of her diagnosis was instantaneous and lasting. Though I took nicotine replacement lozenges (similar to the gum, but with a weird pepperminty flavour) for almost 6 months after my final cigarette, it was a safety measure rather than a necessity. I'd quit unsuccessfully lots of time before, but this was different - my mother was going to die because of these stupid bloody cynical things that were intentionally pumped full of chemicals and toxins. Why would I follow down the same path?

Thank you for taking the time in what must be a hugely busy existence to write this. I hope it helps someone out there who needs a bit of extra encouragement.
